Abdominal Wounds Treated without Drainage

Case 1.?In a rioting case, a man, aged about 45, was severely injured, and among other wounds he had a spear wound in the lower part of his abdomen extending obliquely from the right iliac region, opening the abdominal cavity and dividing the bladder at its neck, the spermatic cord on the left side, and coming out at the region of left hip. The intestines were protruding. There was no fresh bleeding when he was admitted. The intestines were cleaned and returned into the abdominal cavity, which had been mopped out. The left testis with cord was removed and stitches applied closing the wound. The neck of the bladder was also stitched. He recovered without peritonitis. Case 2.?A man, aged about 30, was brought into hospital with a stab wound on the right side of the abdomen through which about 6 inches of intestines protruded and were covered with a piece of dirty rag. The exposed intestines were cleaned and returned into the abdomen, which had first been mopped carefully as far as possible. He made an uneventful recovery, and had no peritonitis. No drainage tube was inserted. Case 3.?A man, aged about 35 (a workman in Jitwarpur factory), was brought into hospital at about 11 p.m. at night with a stab wound in the abdomen, coils of intestines protruding and supported by a piece of dirty rag. The wound had to be extended a little, and the intestines having been cleaned were returned into the abdomen which was mopped out as far as possible. The wound was closed; no drainage tube put in.
